This orchestral work explores how small, quick, simple movements can initiate a much larger action.  This is clearly shown at the beginning when sforzandi in the low strings quickly fill in a G minor chord, turning it into a dense and ominous cluster or sound band from which other harmonies and eventually free gestural material emerge.  Over the course of the work the "harmonies" become less block-like and more lyrical (even in a 19th century sense), and the "gestural" is reduced to ostinati and then simple pulses at the end.  Click on links below to see and hear.
